1430 originally signed on in the 1930s as KTUL radio with CBS network programming and a MOR music format. In the fall of 1961 the station was bought by new owners, switched to a Top 40 hits format and the call letters were changed to KELi (with the little "i" in the station logo). KELi became famous for having a DJ and news staff all with the last name of "Kelly" during the 1960s. The station broadcast from the "Satellite Building" in the middle of the Tulsa State Fairgrounds until the station moved in 1982. The station had studio tours and did many promotions during the Tulsa State Fair. KELi's Top 40 format lasted for 20 years, even outlasting more popular rival KAKC 970 which switched to MOR standards in 1979. Since the early 1980s 1430 has aired news/talk, contemporary hits (as the short-lived "14-K / 92-K" in 1983-4), oldies, adult contemporary, classic country and sports talk.
AM1430 The Buzz has been a Sports Talk station for the better part of two decades. Current properties include the Oklahoma Sooners, Tulsa Drillers, WestWood One College Basketball and Football, and the Dallas Cowboys. AM1430 and AM1300 in Tulsa combine to form the Buzz Sports Network. AM1430 features Fox Sports Radio's the Jim Rome Show and Dan Patrick, while AM1300 is an ESPN Radio affiliate. Local programming on AM1430 The Buzz features the Big Show with Chris Plank, Jeremie Poplin, and Don King, weekday afternoons from 2-6pm CST.
